Geospatial Assessment of Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields Near Power Infrastructure in Abuja, Nigeria: A Public Health and Energy Planning Perspective

This presentation outlines a comprehensive research project to conduct a geospatial assessment of human exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) from power infrastructure in Abuja, Nigeria. The study aims to address growing public health concerns by identifying and classifying high-risk zones where residential communities intersect with high-voltage power transmission corridors. Through the proposed integration of GIS mapping, theoretical EMF modelling, and systematic field validation, this research will develop a robust evidence base for informed energy planning and public health policy. The project proposes the creation of a detailed spatial database to manage infrastructure, population, and field measurement data. The expected outcomes include the production of EMF exposure risk maps and evidence-based recommendations for mitigating public health risks, such as the establishment of safety buffers and infrastructure modifications. This work is designed to provide a replicable framework for sustainable urban development, directly supporting national health safety objectives and contributing to the achievement of SDG 3 (Good Health) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities).
