The Effect of Shaker Exercise and Mendelsohn Maneuver on Swallowing Ability in Patients with Dysphagia

Background: Stroke is one of the non-communicable diseases which continues to increase and proses a huge burden in both developed and developing countries such as Indonesia. Problems that arise in stroke patients such as difficulty speaking, weakness of the limbs, swallowing disorders. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to see the effect of Shaker Exercise and Medelshon Manuver on swallowing ability in dysphagia patients, especially in patients with post-stroke. Methods: The research design used in this study was quasy experiment with two treatment groups, the number of samples in this study was 42 respondents with 21 respondents per group with a technical sampling using a Consecutive sampling technique. Results: After the shaker exercise and Medelshon Manuver, the difference in swallowing ability between before and after exercise, the mean swallowing ability between before and after swallowing exercise in the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group with the p value = 0,001. Multivariate results showed an increase in swallowing ability in each intervention given to the intervention group, the average increase in swallowing ablity in the twelfth session with a mean of 1.38 where the increase was significant with p value <0.001. Conclusion: the conclusion og this study is that the Shaker Exercise and Madelshon Manuver greatly affect the ability to swallow in dysphagia patient. In adittion, this intervention can be a supporting intervention that is an alternative for patients with the same problem, especially in dysphagia.
