Neuropsychiatric Associations of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and its Implications with Mental Health and Depression

This paper investigates the psychiatric burden associated with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), an underrecognized multisystem disorder driven by aberrant mast cell mediator release. Drawing on survey data and clinical reports, the study highlights the high prevalence of depression, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and fatigue in MCAS populations, symptoms that often fluctuate with disease flares. Mechanistic evidence suggests that mast cell–driven neuroinflammation may contribute to these psychiatric outcomes, compounding overall disease burden and reducing quality of life. The review underscores the importance of early recognition and integrated management of psychiatric comorbidities alongside physical symptoms. It also identifies critical research gaps, calling for longitudinal studies and controlled trials to clarify causality and inform therapeutic strategies targeting both immune and mental health pathways.
