Critical Analysis of the 2-Adic Topological Approach to the Collatz Conjecture

We present a comprehensive account of a research program investigating the Collatzconjecture via 2-adic topology and dynamical systems methods. The program proceededthrough two distinct phases: (1) an attempt to prove topological irreducibility via measureexpansion arguments, and (2) a constructive approach based on bit-by-bit preimage density. Both approaches encountered fundamental obstructions. In Phase 1, a critical error wasidentified in the expansion inequality, invalidating the entire measure-theoretic strategy. In Phase 2, computational investigations revealed structural algebraic obstructions: thepreimage tree T∗−n({1}) exhibits systematic exclusion of approximately 50% of all prefixes(those beginning with ’0’), contradicting the Bit Control Lemma that was central to theconstructive strategy. These negative results establish rigorous limitations of global 2-adicconstructive methods for the Collatz problem. The report documents all methodologies, intermediate results, computational validations, and the precise nature of the failures.
