ATTITUDE TOWARDS INTERNET& SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES IN GOVERNMENT AIZAWL NORTH COLLEGE STUDENTS

This research explores students’ attitudes toward the Internet and Social Networking Sites (SNSs) at Government Aizawl North College, highlighting the growing role of digital platforms in modern education and communication. The study aimed to understand the general perception of students regarding the use of the Internet and SNSs, compare these attitudes across gender and academic disciplines, and identify how these differences influence usage patterns. A descriptive survey method was adopted, with a total of 120 students 60 male and 60 female selected from the Education and Political Science departments. Data were collected using a standardized attitude scale developed by Dr Subbash Sarkar and Prasenjit (2005), and the results were analysed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. The findings revealed that most students (45.83%) had an average favourable attitude toward the Internet and SNSs, followed by (33.33%) with a favourable and 15.83% with a highly favourable attitude. Only a few students exhibited negative perceptions, with (4.16%) having an unfavourable attitude and (0.83%) showing an extremely unfavourable attitude. A significant difference in attitude was found between male and female students, with male students showing more positive responses. However, no significant difference was found between students from the Education and Political Science streams. The study concludes that although students generally have a positive attitude toward digital platforms, gender disparities still exist. These findings suggest a need for digital education initiatives, especially to encourage equal participation and confidence among female students, ensuring all learners can effectively use the Internet and Social Networking Sites (SNSs) for academic and personal development.
