Artistic Applications of AI Video Generation and Editing Technologies and Their Copyright and Ethical Challenges
This study examines the artistic applications of artificial intelligence (AI)-based video generation and editing technologies, along with the associated copyright and ethical challenges. Centered on the development of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Diffusion Models, AI video technologies have transformed creative practices across film, advertising, and new media art. In cinema, AI enables de-aging and realistic synthesis that expand directorial possibilities; in advertising, it enhances efficiency and accelerates market responsiveness; and in new media art, it becomes a conceptual theme as well as a creative tool. However, these advancements also raise critical issues, including the diminished role of human creators, the erosion of artistic authenticity, copyright infringements from unauthorized training data, and the social risks of deepfake misuse. Different jurisdictions have taken divergent approaches: the U.S. emphasizes human authorship, the EU enforces transparency and accountability, Japan permits broad data mining, China imposes strong regulations, and Korea maintains a transitional stance. This paper argues that while AI fosters new artistic horizons and democratizes video creation, its sustainability requires solid legal and ethical frameworks. Future art education should combine technical training with legal and ethical literacy, while international cooperation is essential to establish common regulatory standards and to shape a new collaborative paradigm between humans and AI in creative practices.
