Sacred Metals in Clean Engines: The Roles of Platinum and Palladium in Automotive Catalytic Systems

Abstract This article explores the pivotal roles of Platinum (Pt) and Palladium (Pd) the two most significant Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) in modern automotive catalytic converters that transform toxic exhaust gases (CO, HC, NOₓ) into less harmful compounds (CO₂, N₂, H₂O). The study compares their functions and distributions in gasoline and diesel engines, highlighting Palladium’s efficiency in low-temperature oxidation and Platinum’s durability under high-temperature diesel conditions. It further discusses the symbolic and technological value of these metals in the era of clean mobility and environmental responsibility. Ultimately, these “sacred metals” exemplify the intersection of metallurgy, chemistry and sustainability that defines the civilization of modern automotive engineering.
