The Ethics of The Divine Name Among The Jews

This study examines the ethical dimensions of divine representation in religious practice by analyzing Jewish traditions of reverencing God's name and their applicability to contemporary Nigerian Pentecostalism, specifically within the Deeper Life Bible Church in Ota, Ogun State. Through a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative survey data (n=500) and qualitative theological analysis, this research investigates whether the erosion of ethical standards among Nigerian Pentecostal Christians correlates with a diminished consciousness of God's holiness and character. The findings reveal that 94.8% of respondents acknowledge a noticeable decline in moral uprightness among Pentecostal Christians, while 93.6% affirm that the Church should present a God-honoring image in character and conduct. Drawing parallels between Jewish ethical frameworks surrounding the divine name (YHWH) and Christian theological anthropology, this study argues that authentic Christian witness requires embodying the character of God as revealed in Scripture. The research identifies compromise, hypocrisy, and inadequate discipleship as primary factors contributing to moral decay within religious communities. This study contributes to the fields of comparative religious ethics, Pentecostal studies, and African Christianity by demonstrating how ancient Jewish ethical principles can inform contemporary ecclesial reform and moral renewal in African Pentecostal contexts.
