Application of Participatory Design in Solving Ergonomic Problems
AIM: The main focus in this research is pointed to the application of participatory design (PD) as an approach in which designers work together with users to create appropriate solutions to given problems. MATERIAL AND METHODS: As an example, for design and development in which PD is applied, a task is established – finding a solution for improving the management and manoeuvring of a specific sailing ship. The redesign implies a comprehensive application of ergonomics, anthropometry and numerous tools for creative and design thinking, with the aim of ensuring the highest level of comfort, safety, ease of communication with the operator, good organization of space, and accessibility for all. RESULTS: At the end of the research, several concepts are developed as solutions for the assigned task. The modelling and visualization of the final concept solution are made using modern software tools, as well as the creation of a simple prototype. CONCLUSIONS: Through the process of redesigning the operating station of the particular sailing ship, the methods for PD and need for including all target groups and users to contribute with their different knowledge in the design process was emphasized.
