The Power of Citizen Science

UNECSS symposium 10 October 2025 Hotel Zuiderduin, Egmond aan Zee The objective of UNECSS is to bring together PhD candidates and Postdocs from UU and NIOZ to explore the intersection of scientific research and public engagement. This year’s theme explores how “hot topics” from media and global discourse shape scientific conversations. Our goal is to equip early-career scientists with practical tools and skills to effectively communicate their research to a wide range of audiences—including the public, journalists, and policy makers. We’re excited to welcome you to an event that’s not just about science, but about connecting, sharing ideas, and helping the next generation of scientists find new ways to engage with the world. Workshop - The Power of Citizen Science - Explore how involving the public in research can expand the reach and impact of your work. Collecting data on marine mammal observations and strandings, counting beach shells, surveying plastic in oceans or monitoring the beach by taking photos. These are allexamples of research where Citizen Science plays a big role. In this interactive workshop, you will learn more about Citizen Science and we will provide an overview of the range of Citizen Science approaches and their impacts. Together, we will interactively explore the methods that might be relevant for your own (future) research and how to get started.
