When Silence Protects Predators- Why I Refuse to Keep Quiet About Being Conceived in an Illegal Relationship

This article argues that family secrecy does not protect children—it protects predators. Anchored in my lived experience of being conceived when a teenage girl was exploited by an adult man, this article speaks plainly about what the law already recognizes: age and power cancel “consent.” I set that truth within the realities many Black families face—historic mistrust of systems, adultification of Black girls, economic dependence on abusers, and church cultures that confuse forgiveness with avoidance—conditions that make disclosure rare and retaliation common. Drawing on public-health research about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), I show how silence becomes a second injury, echoing across a child’s body and lifespan. I name grooming for what it is (a strategy, not romance) and translate legal guardrails (like New Jersey’s bright-line statutes) into everyday language. Finally, I lay out “better doors” than hush or chaos: survivor-first church policies, two-adult rules, trauma-informed care, culturally responsive reporting paths, and concrete safety planning any family can use today. This is both testimony and blueprint: a refusal to be the coffin for a family secret, and a call to communities and institutions to choose the child over their image—every single time.
