Gastric Mucormycosis in a Patient with Uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus at a Tertiary Care Hospital
Gastric mucormycosis is uncommon and presents with nonspecific symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis and high mortality. A 49-year-old male was admitted with shock and extensive trauma sustained in a railway accident 12 days back. KOH mount of debrided tissue revealed hyaline aseptate fungal hyphae. Following an episode of hematemesis and melena, gastric endoscopy showed a large necrotic ulcer, confirmed histopathologically as mucormycosis. Despite aggressive treatment, the patient deteriorated with massive gastrointestinal bleeding and fatal myocardial infarction. Clinical suspicion and early endoscopic evaluation are crucial, though prognosis of gastric mucormycosis is often poor.
