Unusual Cutaneous Presentation of Lupus Vulgaris: A Diagnostic Dilemma
Lupus vulgaris is a persistent and advancing kind of cutaneous tuberculosis, commonly observed in patients who have been exposed to tuberculosis in the past or have a weakened immune system. A 21-year-old male presented with elevated skin lesions over bilateral elbows and right knee. The histopathological analysis showed localized thinning of the outer layer of the skin and presence of a collection of immune cells in the deeper layer of the skin, consisting of several clusters of specialized immune cells with non-caseating necrosis. The diagnosis was verified after a comprehensive assessment that included clinical examination, dermatoscopy, histopathology, and microbiological tests. Timely identification and suitable administration of antitubercular treatment are essential to avert problems.
