Innovations in Drug Delivery Systems Using Chemical Engineering

Drug delivery systems (DDS) have evolved significantly, integrating principles of chemical engineering, nanotechnology, and materials science to enhance therapeutic efficacy, safety, and patient compliance.Conventional drug administration methods, such as oral tablets and injections, face limitations including poor bioavailability, rapid degradation, and non-specific distribution, which reduce treatment effectiveness and increase systemic toxicity.Modern DDS address these challenges through innovations such as nanoparticles, liposomes, polymeric carriers, and biodegradable materials, enabling controlled, sustained, and targeted drug release.Chemical engineering contributes to the design, optimization, and scale-up of these systems, ensuring reproducibility, precise drug release kinetics, and efficient manufacturing processes.Targeted delivery approaches, including ligand-mediated targeting and stimuli-responsive carriers, enhance drug accumulation at disease sites while minimizing off-target effects.Microfluidic technologies allow precise formulation of uniform drug carriers, facilitating personalized medicine.Biocompatible and biodegradable materials further ensure safety and minimize long-term accumulation in the body.Despite the progress, challenges remain in terms of stability, scalability, regulatory compliance, and in vivo predictability.Ongoing research and emerging technologies, such as multifunctional nanocarriers, combination therapies, and integration with artificial intelligence, promise to expand the capabilities of DDS, enabling more effective and patient-specific treatments for complex diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders
