COACHING EXPERIENCES OF WINNING NON-PE MAJORS IN SELECT SPORTS DISCIPLINES TOWARD A TRAINING PROGRAM

This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of high school teacher-coaches who are non-Physical Education (PE) majors in select sports disciplines within the Schools Division of Bataan for SY 2024–2025. It focused on the challenges they face and the strategies they use to manage dual roles as academic teachers and sports coaches. Six purposively selected non-PE teacher-coaches participated in semi-structured interviews, sharing detailed accounts of their coaching responsibilities. The findings revealed a range of challenges, including role conflict, lack of administrative and financial support, limited access to training, and insufficient recognition. In response, participants showed strong adaptability through self-learning, collaboration, disciplined planning, and a deep commitment to student development. Their coaching efforts, initially driven by necessity or personal interest, evolved into meaningful contributions to both school sports and student success. The study recommends enhanced support systems, structured training opportunities, and formal recognition of non-PE coaches in school programs. In response, the Sports Coaching Advancement Program for Educators (SCAPE) is proposed to offer professional development, mentoring, administrative support, and access to resources tailored to the needs of non-PE teacher-coaches.
