THE RISE OF DIGITAL PAYMENTS IN INDIA: A STUDY ON CONSUMER BEHAVIOR AND FINANCIAL INCLUSION
This research paper examines the rapid growth of digital payment systems in India, focusing on their role in reshaping everyday transactions, promoting financial inclusion, and transforming the broader economy. The study begins by exploring the background of government initiatives such as Digital India and Jan Dhan Yojana, which laid the groundwork for widespread adoption of online payment methods. It then analyses key drivers like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and popular platforms including Paytm, Google Pay, and PhonePe, highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift towards cashless transactions. Through a combination of primary data and secondary sources, the paper studies consumer behaviour, the effectiveness of policies, and the challenges of bridging the urban-rural divide. Findings reveal that while urban areas have readily embraced digital tools, significant gaps remain in digital literacy, cybersecurity awareness, and connectivity in remote regions. The paper recommends targeted literacy campaigns, stronger security frameworks, regional language app interfaces, and policy incentives to ensure safe and inclusive digital adoption. It concludes by emphasising the transformative power of digital payments in building a more accessible financial ecosystem and suggests future research into emerging technologies such as blockchain, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and artificial intelligence in financial services.
