CEFR-based Evaluation of English Language Tests Targeting B1 and B2 Levels in a Preparatory Program: A Case Study
This study aims to investigate the alignment of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) with B1 and B2 level language tests conducted at a preparatory school of a state university in Turkey. Based on the qualitative data collected from comparisons of CEFR-based tests and CEFR illustrative scales, this study employed a qualitative case study design to explore whether the applied tests align with the target levels regarding the CEFR. The sample included 4 B1-level tests and 5 B2-level tests assessing four main skills and two language components. The purposive sampling method was used in the study. Document analysis, a qualitative research approach, was used to analyze data. Findings indicated that the exams showed more substantial alignment with CEFR descriptors in specific productive skills, whereas receptive and mediation skills demonstrated weaker alignment. This study contributes to the expanding literature of language assessment based on the CEFR through an in-depth case study approach, with practical implications for EFL lecturers in the testing offices and directors of the preparatory school at universities, ELT departments at universities, policymakers in language testing, and CoHE in Turkey..
