A CRITICAL STUDY INTO THE IMPACT OF CABLE PARAMETERS ON FAULT CURRENT AND SCREEN VOLTAGE IN EXTRA HIGH VOLTAGE CABLES
Extra High Voltage (EHV) cables play a vital role in today’s power transmission networks. A key aspect of their design and protection involves managing the screen-to-earth voltage and the fault current magnitude during electrical disturbances. This paper presents an analytical investigation into how cable parameters—resistance (R), inductance (L), and capacitance (C)—influence screen voltage and fault current in 132 kV solid-insulated EHV cables. The study combines theoretical calculations with MATLAB-based simulations to assess the impact of varying R, L, and C values per kilometer under fault conditions. Screen voltage waveforms are generated for different parameter sets, revealing that both screen voltage and fault current are strongly dependent on cable impedance. The findings highlight that careful selection of parameter values can reduce transient voltages and enhance overall system protection.
