Ethical Considerations of Human Gene Editing: A Case for a big step in medicine

Advances in genetics, biotechnology, and computational biology have enabled precise human genome editing. CRISPR-Cas9, base editing, and prime editing allow targeted correction of disease-causing mutations, offering transformative approaches to inherited disorders such as congenital heart defects, cystic fibrosis, and early-onset Type 1 diabetes. Examples include CRISPR-mediated CFTR correction, embryonic repair of cardiomyopathy mutations, and generation of insulin-producing β-cells, illustrating the potential for durable, one-time interventions that could reduce lifelong treatment burdens. This study also examines ethical, legal, and social implications, including off-target effects, mosaicism, germline editing, non-therapeutic enhancements, and inequitable access. The controversial case of He Jiankui highlights the urgent need for robust oversight, international governance, and enforceable ethical frameworks. Drawing on over 30 sources, the paper discusses responsible implementation strategies, including tiered regulation, transparent public engagement, long-term monitoring, and global harmonization of ethical standards. Ultimately, guided by rigorous ethical principles and global cooperation, human gene editing offers unprecedented opportunities to prevent and cure genetic diseases, alleviate suffering, and shift medical practice from palliative care to true prevention, positioning these technologies as tools for universal health advancement rather than instruments of privilege.
