HYSTRAM – HYDROGEN STORAGE AND TRANSPORT USING AMMONIA: A HORIZON EUROPE FUNDED PROJECT

The HySTrAm (Hydrogen Storage and TRansport using Ammonia) project aims to overcome crucial challenges in hydrogen storage and transport to allow its broader usage as a zero-emission fuel in the framework of the Europe Union's decarbonisation goals. While hydrogen is a clean source of energy, its storage usually requires either high-pressure tanks (up to 700 bar) or cryogenic conditions (-253°C), and therefore its practicality is limited. Ammonia (NH₃) is emerging as a very promising carrier of hydrogen - if it can be produced in a flexible and efficient way. In the HySTrAm project, a novel containerized system for green ammonia synthesis at low pressure is proposed through a two- stage procedure: (1) short-term hydrogen storage in a vessel using novel ultraporous materials optimised through machine learning, and (2) an advanced ammonia synthesis reactor based on a modified Haber-Bosch process using novel catalysts and absorbent materials developed in the project. HySTrAm's ultimate goal is the construction of a pilot plant at Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL5) to demonstrate a cost-effective and commercially viable process for the production of green ammonia. The project is funded by the European Union and involves a multidisciplinary consortium of academic and industrial partners.
