TRANSFORMATION AND CHALLENGES IN THE INDIAN BANKING INDUSTRY: AN EXAMINATION OF REGULATORY, TECHNOLOGICAL, AND COMPETITIVE FORCES
The Indian banking industry has experienced deep transformation in the last three decades with liberalization, technological improvements, and changing regulatory paradigms. In this study, the multifaced issues and opportunities facing Indian banks are analyzed as they contend with an increasingly complex environment that is impacted by the nuances of regulatory compliance in the digital age, necessitating banks to navigate through regulation-tight data protection laws and regulatory regimes while maintaining ethical use of customer data. From recent literature, we analyze how digital disruption, regulatory transformation, and competitive pressures have turned the banking paradigm on its head. The industry's transformation from a highly regulated, state-driven model towards one more market-oriented encompasses similar striking advances as well as concealed weaknesses. As digital payment systems, fintech innovations, cybercrime risks, regulatory frameworks, as well as financial inclusion mark their presence in banking, they've also created new weaknesses and competitive forces. Our evidence indicates that effective adaptation necessitates an intangible balancing act between embracing innovation and fiscal conservatism, especially as the industry is faced with challenges like regulatory changes, increased cost of doing business, increased competition from fintech players while at the same time seizing opportunities brought about by digital innovation, structural reform, and changing customer needs.
