TRADITIONAL COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN SELECTED BOUNDARY DISPUTE COMMUNITIES IN AKWA IBOM STATE.
This study examines traditional communication strategies and conflict resolution in boundary dispute communities in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The research aimed to: (1) identify prevalent traditional communication modes, (2) analyse adopted conflict resolution strategies, (3) explore cultural contexts shaping these approaches, and (4) evaluate their effectiveness. Grounded in Volkan's (2009) Enemy System Theory, the study employed a mixed-methods design, combining surveys (n=387) and interviews with 10 village heads. Findings revealed that oral traditions like storytelling and proverbs remain central to dispute resolution, while communal assemblies and elder mediation maintain strong legitimacy. However, generational shifts and legal marginalisation threaten some practices. The study concludes that traditional systems effectively foster social cohesion but require adaptation to contemporary challenges. Recommendations include preserving indigenous communication methods through education, formalising hybrid mediation frameworks, and addressing resource conflicts through culturally sensitive approaches. These measures could enhance sustainable peacebuilding while respecting local traditions.
