EFFECT OF ACTIVE LEARNING ON STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILLS: THE CASE OF GRADE 11 STUDENTS IN BULE HORA SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT: The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of TBI of AL on the speaking skill of grade 11 students of Bule Hora Secondary School. The theoretical bases of AL, to this end, strongly suggest TBLT approach specifically for language competencies associated with speaking. A pre-test-posttest control group only experimental research design was, therefore, employed in which a TBI was prepared and implemented for the speaking portions of the first four units of grade 11 English education. The speaking performance test was administered to 46 students of a randomly selected 11C section twice before and after the implementation of TBI. Interview of the purposely selected teachers and students was carried out at the end. The quantitative data was analyzed using computations of the common descriptive statistics, paired t-test and effect size while categorical analysis was employed for the qualitative data. As a result, it was found that TBI had a very large effect on the improvement of speaking skill of the students. In terms of the type of speaking competence, the TBI was found to have larger effect on the development grammatical and pragmatic competence, and low effect on the discourse competence. On the other hand, activities of explaining the way to familiar places and analyses of real-world cases are more effective in improving their speaking skill. Besides, low teachers’ preference (as they think it is tiresome), its demand of longer time for assessment, unsuitability of the curricular materials, poor students’ background and interest were found to be the potential challenges associated with implementation of TBI.
