A Review of Problem Based Learning (PBL) in Enhancing Junior High School Students' Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills
Abstract: Problem-solving ability is one of the essential skills that students must develop in mathematics learning at the junior high school level. However, many students still experience difficulties when dealing with mathematical problems that require critical and analytical thinking. One effective alternative to address this issue is the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. This study aims to review previous research discussing the implementation of PBL in improving students’ mathematical problem-solving skills at the junior high school level. The review was conducted using a literature study method by analyzing nine national and international journal articles published between 2018 and 2024. The results indicate that the application of PBL consistently has a positive effect on enhancing students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities. Through problem-oriented learning, students become more active, engaged, and independent in exploring solutions. Nevertheless, several challenges were also identified, such as limited learning time, teachers’ readiness, and students’ adaptation to the problem-based learning approach. Overall, the findings highlight that PBL is an effective and relevant learning model for mathematics instruction in junior high schools, with great potential for further development through technological integration and collaborative strategies.
