Old Mining Activities in Kuala Lipis, Pahang: A Brief Observation Through Available Historical Records
This paper analyzes historical records to observe gold mining in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, during the late 19th-century transition. It argues that the colonial gold rush was a formalization of sophisticated pre-existing Malay (dulang) and Chinese (lombong) mining economies, not a new discovery. The 1888 British intervention fundamentally shifted the landscape from localized, tiered access to centralized corporate control and large-scale lode mining. The records document the resulting economic displacement and marginalization of local miners, illustrating how colonial administrative priorities drove the region’s infrastructural development and resource identity.
