THE POLITICAL PARTICIPATION OF YOUNG WOMEN: BARRIERS, STRUGGLES, AND GLOBAL TRENDS

The political participation of young women represents a crucial component of democratic inclusion and gender equality in contemporary societies. Despite growing global awareness, young women remain significantly underrepresented in political institutions and decision-making processes due to persistent structural, cultural, and institutional barriers. These include entrenched gender roles, limited access to education and economic resources, male-dominated party structures, and the prevalence of violence and harassment in political arenas. Age-based prejudice compounds these obstacles, creating a unique form of intersectional discrimination. This study employs a qualitative literature review method to examine the multifaceted challenges young women face in political engagement and representation. Drawing from feminist political theory, intersectionality, and participatory democracy frameworks, the research identifies key themes related to barriers, resistance strategies, and regional trends. Findings show that while some regions such as Africa and Latin America have made progress through quota systems and youth-inclusive reforms, other regions like the Middle East and South Asia continue to struggle with deeply rooted patriarchal norms. Importantly, the study highlights emerging forms of political engagement among young women, particularly through digital activism, youth movements, and transnational networks. Strategies such as mentorship programs, leadership training, and civil society involvement are critical in building capacity and resilience. Furthermore, global trends show that while legal reforms are necessary, they must be supported by cultural transformation and sustained policy efforts to be effective.Ultimately, this research emphasizes that enhancing the political representation of young women is essential not only for gender justice but also for the strengthening of democracy. It offers policy recommendations that prioritize intersectionality, inclusivity, and multi-level collaboration to empower young women as active agents in political life worldwide.
