Engineering Solutions for Climate Crisis Mitigation in the United States: A Pathway to Resilient and Low-Carbon Futures

The climate crisis poses an unprecedented challenge to the United States, demanding transformative solutions across sectors. Engineering plays a pivotal role in developing and implementing strategies for climate change mitigation, ranging from energy-efficient infrastructure to renewable energy integration and circular material flows. This article critically examines the contribution of civil and environmental engineering to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the U.S. construction and urban systems sector—responsible for nearly 40% of national emissions. Through a conceptual framework combining life-cycle assessment (LCA), decarbonization modeling, and resilience-oriented design, the study evaluates innovative approaches such as net-zero energy buildings, advanced material recycling, carbon capture in construction, and climate-adaptive urban planning. Results suggest that engineering-driven interventions could cut construction-related emissions by up to 60% by 2050 while enhancing climate resilience and equity. The discussion situates these contributions within global climate targets, highlighting practical challenges—such as regulatory fragmentation, financial barriers, and technological adoption gaps—while identifying pathways for research and implementation. Ultimately, the article asserts that civil and environmental engineers are central actors in operationalizing climate policies, translating ambitious decarbonization targets into tangible infrastructure capable of shaping a resilient, equitable, and low-carbon U.S. future.

Abstract

Ultimately, the article asserts that civil and environmental engineers are central actors in operationalizing climate policies, translating ambitious decarbonization targets into tangible infrastructure capable of shaping a resilient, equitable, and low-carbon U.S. future.
