Enhancing the EMI-Resilience of Communication Networks Through Warning Propagation: A Multilayer Approach

This article presents a multilayer warning propagation framework to enhance electromagnetic interference resilience. This approach comprises multiple distinct error detection and correction techniques, each operating independently yet collaboratively. Unlike traditional concatenated coding approaches, the multilayer method is designed to integrate warnings generated by layers that address errors at different levels. A case study is conducted using simulations over a frequency range (0.1GHz–1 GHz) and varying signal-to-interference ratios. It is shown that while individual layers are found to exhibit vulnerabilities under specific electromagnetic interference conditions, the combination of these layers is observed to achieve near-zero undetected error rates, thereby enhancing system safety. In addition, the combination of layers is used to allow system designers to optimize falsely reported error rates, balancing safety and availability.
