Flexural wave interaction with compressive floating ice over undulating porous bed

This paper addresses the flexural gravity wave propagation and Bragg scattering problem in compressed floating ice over a thick, undulating porous seabed. The study focuses on three key aspects: (a) with a suitable linear approximation incorporating a turbulent term in the porous bed’s resistance coefficient to assess the effect on the flexural wave propagation, (b) analysing wave blocking and multiple wavemode propagation over the porous bed that occur due to wave blocking under the effect of compressive force and (c) analysing first-order Bragg scattering by multiple propagating modes using the asymptotic method. The results reveal that the turbulent term within the porous resistance coefficient increases the magnitude of the wave reflection. This phenomenon persists even for other propagating modes within the wave-blocking range. In addition, Bragg resonance is observed for the primary propagating mode due to the undulating seabed, with the turbulent term in the resistance coefficient amplifying the resonance. The analysis further highlights the significant influence of the porous medium’s thickness on the harmonic peaks, which show that the Bragg peak shifts and breaks into two sub-harmonic peaks. The study is focused on an entirely mathematical approach to improving the flexural gravity wave propagation model, which will significantly benefit marine environments.
