Simulation-Based Characterization of the ADA4530-1 for Cost-Effective Picoammeter Front-End Design
This project presents the simulation and performance validation of a precision picoammeter front-end designed to measure currents from 50 fA to 50 nA with high accuracy and stability. Two design configurations were analyzed: Ultra-Low Range — for ultra-sensitive measurements (50 fA to 500 pA). Very-Low Range — for medium-sensitivity measurements (5 pA to 50 nA). Both DC and pulsated DC inputs at 50 Hz and 250 Hz were simulated using LTspice to assess transient behavior, stability, and integration accuracy. The results confirm that optimized Rf–Cf combinations govern the time constant (τ = Rf·Cf), balancing response speed (500 microseconds) and sensitivity effectively. This study validates the feasibility of extending measurement capability from the femtoampere to nanoampere domain with careful control of parasitic effects and component tolerances. It forms the basis for hardware realization, with emphasis on PCB parasitic mitigation, guarding, and noise control for ultra-low current instrumentation.
