Updates from the LSST Solar System Science Collaboration
The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory will commence shortly. Over the next 10 years millions of solar system objects (SSOs) will be discovered. The rapid nature of LSST alerts means that exciting new discoveries can be announced and followed up quickly. LSST will produce an unprecedented dataset of SSO photometry across 6 filters, which will enable us to study the properties of asteroids and comets like never before. The LSST Solar System Science Collaboration (SSSC) has been working to support scientists preparing for LSST and to develop the tools needed to leverage the data. Furthermore, the SSSC provides recommendations and feedback to the Rubin team to ensure LSST meets the needs of the community. With the recent Rubin First Look and Data Preview 1, we now have the first Rubin SSOs and data to analyse. It is an exciting time for solar system science and we look forward to the many discoveries that will be made with LSST.
