Ten Applications of Financial Machine Learning
This article surveys 10 applications where machine learning (ML) has demonstrated practical value in finance, moving beyond hype to deliver real results. From asset pricing and portfolio construction to sentiment analysis, credit ratings, and trade execution, ML methods have been applied to financial challenges that traditional econometrics struggles to address. While ML introduces such risks as overfitting and interpretability, its flexibility, ability to handle large and complex datasets, and power to detect nonlinear interactions make it a transformative tool for financial practitioners. The purpose of this article is educational: to highlight areas where ML has proved most effective, explain why it works, and discuss how practitioners can adopt these methods responsibly.
