From Topological Rupture to a Quantitative Obstruction: A Logbook of a Failed Assault on the Collatz Conjecture

This research note documents the complete trajectory of an experimental program aimed at generating a novel approach to the Collatz Conjecture. The inquiry began with a forced modal rupture, reframing the arithmetic problem as one of topological dynamics on the 2-adic integers. This led to a multi-stage effort to translate the topological intuition into a falsifiable computational protocol, culminating in a conditional proof skeleton hinging on a Diophantine strategy. The program, though pursued to its logical conclusion, ultimately failed by colliding with a precise quantitative obstruction. The strategy required an appli- cation of the p-adic Subspace Theorem, but the very mechanism of the proof construction was shown to be incapable of satisfying the theorem’s required smallness condition. This document presents the full arc from the initial geometric intuition to the final, rigorously established, negative result. This negative result, which clarifies a fundamental limitation of this line of attack, is the primary contribution of the work.
