Virtual Reality Environment for Power System Analysis: A Load Flow Simulation Framework Implemented in Unity
The integration of power system analysis with virtual environments is gaining significant attention due to the increasing demand for 3D visualization and interactive simulations. This paper presents a novel framework that unifies power system simulation and interactive 3D visualization within Unity, a widely used game engine, enabling real-time, interoperable load flow analysis in a virtual environment. By integrating the Newton-Raphson (NR) method directly into Unity’s computational pipeline, this work demonstrates that load flow analysis can be performed and visualized interactively within a single immersive environment. A test network consisting of twelve houses, each equipped with three solar panels, was modeled to analyze the variation of the load flow under different seasonal conditions. To estimate solar power generation, a render texture technique was employed to extract RGB color data from the solar panels, which was then converted into irradiance values for solar power calculations. The proposed framework allows users to see the plots of the voltage profiles of houses in real-time, providing an interactive representation of the power system behavior. The results show the feasibility of performing load flow analysis directly within Unity, highlighting its potential as a VR-based educational and research tool for power system analysis.
