A Pathway to Sustainable Community Based-Event Tourism
Abstract: This study explores the role of Community-Based Event Tourism (CBET) in reducing poverty and strengthening the family economy among indigenous communities in Kuala Sat, with a focus on Perkampungan Orang Asli Bengoi. It highlights the significance of stakeholder engagement, innovation, and lifelong learning as key drivers of CBET development. A qualitative case study approach was applied, drawing on observation, interviews, and community participation to examine how indigenous communities adapt to CBET initiatives. The analysis emphasizes the integration of innovation, social participation, and collaborative stakeholder engagement in building sustainable tourism practices. Results indicate that CBET contributes to indigenous empowerment by enhancing economic resilience and fostering a sense of belonging within rural communities. Limited access to transportation and telecommunications remains a challenge, but stakeholder collaboration through the quadruple helix model provides essential support. Innovation and social learning, particularly among indigenous youth, enhance creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability, thereby strengthening household economies. The findings suggest that incorporating innovation into CBET is essential for sustaining indigenous livelihoods and ensuring long-term tourism development. Future research should further investigate the impact of creative and innovative practices on indigenous economic resilience.
