Rural Housing Schemes and Their Role in Improving Living Standards: A study
Abstract Housing is more than a basic necessity; it serves as a cornerstone of human development. In rural areas, inadequate housing conditions—such as overcrowding, leaky roofs, and poor sanitation—perpetuate cycles of poverty, ill health, and low productivity. To address these challenges, governments across the globe, including India, Brazil, and South Africa, have introduced large-scale rural housing schemes. Programs such as India’s Pradhan Mantri Awes Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) aim not only to provide affordable housing but also to improve sanitation, credit access, and economic opportunities. This paper explores the broader impact of rural housing schemes on poverty reduction, economic stability, public health, and social empowerment. It highlights how secure housing fosters asset creation, reduces migration, promotes education, and supports women’s empowerment while also integrating with sanitation, infrastructure, and climate resilience initiatives. At the same time, the study identifies key challenges, including bureaucratic delays, corruption, and issues of housing quality, which undermine the effectiveness of these schemes. The paper concludes by suggesting policy reforms to enhance inclusivity, sustainability, and long-term impact, positioning rural housing as a catalyst for holistic rural development.
