Geospatial Scholarship in India: Bibliometric Trends and Impact of GIS and Remote Sensing Research (2000–2024)
This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of research output on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) using data retrieved from the Scopus database. Bibliometric techniques, including co-citation analysis, scientific collaboration mapping, co-word analysis, and network visualization, were applied through Biblioshiny and VOSviewer. A total of 9,118 papers published between 2000 and 2024 were analyzed, revealing steady annual growth. India leads globally with 8,594 publications, 133,709 citations, and a total link strength of 694, followed by the United States with 160 publications and 6,270 citations. Institutionally, the Indian Institute of Technology ranks first (337 publications), followed by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (240 publications). The Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing leads among journals with 425 publications and 7,750 citations. Kumar A is the most prolific author (176 publications), while Singh S.K. has the highest scholarly impact with 4,158 citations from 108 documents, along with the top h-index (31) and g-index (63). The most frequent keywords include Remote Sensing, GIS, Geographic Information Systems, Satellite Imagery, and Land Use.
