Childhood mortality in Gaza 2024: A comparative analysis with global disease burden
Childhood Mortality in Gaza 2024: A Comparative Analysis with Global Disease Burden This study analyzes childhood mortality patterns in Gaza during 2024 using official Ministry of Health data and applies established indirect mortality estimation methods to compare conflict-related deaths with global disease burden statistics. We calculated mortality rates for children aged 0-14 years using direct reported deaths (8,956) and indirect estimates based on 4:1 and 10:1 ratios commonly applied in conflict settings, yielding estimates of 35,822 and 89,555 total deaths respectively. When compared to 2021 Global Burden of Disease data, these figures rank conflict-related mortality in Gaza among the leading causes of global childhood deaths despite representing only 0.03% of world population. Under-five mortality rates increased up to 34-fold from pre-conflict baselines. The analysis highlights methodological challenges in mortality estimation during active conflict and demonstrates the absence of conflict-related deaths from standard global health surveillance frameworks. Data limitations include reliance on hospital-based reporting systems under severe infrastructure damage and political constraints affecting data collection. The study contributes to understanding mortality patterns in conflict zones and their contextual significance within global child health metrics.
