Harnessing Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria for Sustainable Agriculture: Mechanisms, Applications, and Future Perspectives

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria also known as PGPR are increasingly being seen as a viable approach to sustainable agriculture due to their ability to provide various benefits to both plants and the environment. These helpful bacteria reside around plant roots within the soil known as the rhizosphere hence forming mutualistic associations that promote plant growth and development. Hence, they employ various ways of influencing plant behaviour to ensure their usefulness in agriculture is felt. PGPR use nitrogen fixation as one major way where specific bacteria convert atmospheric turgidum into something other than gas which is absorbed by plants. Nitrogen deficiency in soil can be mitigated by these PGPR hence taking away the necessity of chemical fertilizers as they reduce environmental pollution that comes with overutilization thereof due to their nitrogenous properties.Phosphate solubilization is yet another significant role by these bacteria which makes phosphorus available for absorption by plants since they release it from liquids or solids in their surroundings. PHOSPHOROUS being one of those nutrients necessary for proper crop development; plants take it up more efficiently through an appropriate distribution in soil carried out by PGPR thus leading to good plant growth. PGPR have the ability to generate phytohormones like auxins, cytokinins, and gibberellins that control diverse plant physiological processes like cell division, elongation, and differentiation. By regulating levels of hormones PGPR alter the growth rate and general functioning of plants leading to higher harvests and tough stress tolerance. PGPR are important in disease control, particularly through nutrient competition, excretion of antibacterial substancesand activation of plant defense mechanisms. It is due to their antagonistic effect on pathogenic organisms that PGPR offer protection to crops against infections hence minimizing the use of chemical pesticides in agroecosystems which are useful in maintaining environmental balance. Biofertilizers are PGPR formulations that can be used to improve soil fertility and stimulate growth of plants in an eco-friendly way. Besides, PGPR-based biocontrol agents can serve as safe agents that are herbicides have been used instead of to control diseases in plants, while the processes involving PGPR can improve plants that remediate polluted soils. In general, the use of PGPR stands as an efficient mode of enhancing agricultural production through intensification of agricultural land use in an effort to increase the yield.
