Conservation Proposal for the Tirilye H. Ioannes Theologos Church (Dündar House); An Innovative Restoration Approach for the Future
The H. Ioannes Theologos Church, located in Tirilye and characterized by its partially collapsed roof covering and upper sections of its walls, continues to maintain its significance as an important architectural element of the region due to its historical value. However, as the building no longer serves its traditional church function due to the absence of a congregation, an innovative conservation approach has been developed to ensure its preservation for future generations. The conservation proposal involves introducing a secondary structure, composed of steel supports and glass materials, within the church, designed to avoid direct physical contact with the existing walls while preserving their current state. The small gap intentionally left between the new structure and the historic walls reflects both respect for the building’s historical identity and a nod to modern architecture's forward-looking perspective. The primary aim of this study is to enhance the physical conditions of the H. Ioannes Theologos Church, with the participation of the local community in Tirilye, and reintegrate it into daily life through transparent and controllable interventions. Most importantly, it seeks to raise awareness about the structure, ensuring its preservation and the transmission of its authentic values to future generations without compromising its integrity.
