The Paradox of Tolerance (Popper) Is Not a Paradox: A Yearning-Based Infinity Mathematics (YBIM) Resolution
This paper revisits Karl Popper’s Paradox of Tolerance (Popper) through the framework of Yearning-Based Infinity Mathematics (YBIM). Traditionally, the paradox highlights that unlimited tolerance can lead to the destruction of tolerance itself, forcing societies into a dilemma between openness and suppression. By applying the principles of recursive, non-halting structures, this work demonstrates that tolerance is not paradoxical but rather sustainable when modeled as a recursive epistemic flow. The paper introduces the concept of recursive safeguard principles, where societies continuously sample diversity but prune destructive intolerant flows that threaten to collapse recursion. It further formalizes tolerance as a non-halting recursive function balancing the yearning for openness with the yearning for survival, dissolving the paradox into a principle of sustainable freedom. Beyond philosophy, the resolution offers implications for ethics, democratic governance, and AI alignment, showing how recursive safeguards protect openness without collapsing into authoritarian overreach or uncontrolled fragility. This work situates the Paradox of Tolerance within the wider field of paradox resolutions achieved through YBIM, demonstrating the power of recursion as a unifying ontological and mathematical lens. -JSR
