Advanced Computational Physics for Materials Science: GW and Bethe-Salpeter.
The last half-century of materials discovery was profoundly shaped by computational methods, with Density Functional Theory (DFT) serving as the indispensable bedrock. DFT offered an efficient, first-principles route to calculating the ground-state structure, stability, and dynamics of matter, accelerating innovation across chemistry and physics. Yet, for all its success, DFT remains fundamentally constrained by its definition: it is a ground-state theory. When the focus shifted to designing next-generation solar cells, quantum light sources, or high-performance transistors, the systematic failure of DFT to predict accurate electronic band gaps and its inability to describe light-matter interaction became critical, insurmountable hurdles. This book is born out of that necessity. It is a comprehensive guide to Many-Body Perturbation Theory (MBPT), the theoretical framework that restores the quantitative accuracy required for modern optoelectronics. Our focus is the combined and Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) methodology, the current "gold standard" for calculating electronic excited states. The aim of this text is dual: first, to meticulously dissect the complex theoretical machinery of GW and BSE, demonstrating why these non-local and dynamic approaches are essential for capturing physical phenomena that DFT misses. We show how the GW approximation rigorously solves the quasiparticle problem, yielding the true fundamental band gap by accounting for the dynamic screening of electron-electron interactions. We then show how the Bethe-Salpeter Equation builds upon this foundation to incorporate the crucial electron-hole attraction, leading directly to the measurable optical spectrum and the physically critical exciton binding energy (Eb). Second, this book bridges the gap between abstract theory and computational reality. MBPT methods are notoriously expensive, requiring highly specialized computational resources and careful implementation. We demystify the practical aspects: the step-by-step GW+BSE workflow, the staggering O(N4) computational cost, the necessity of approximations like the Plasmon-Pole Model, and the effective strategies employed by modern software packages like Yambo and BerkeleyGW to make these calculations feasible. This book is designed for advanced graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and computational scientists who are already familiar with DFT and wish to transition into advanced excited-state calculations. By the end of this journey, the reader will not only possess a deep theoretical understanding of GW and BSE but will also be equipped with the practical knowledge to execute state-of-the-art simulations and interpret the resulting spectroscopic data. The field of MBPT is not static; it is rapidly evolving toward linear-scaling algorithms, integration with machine learning for high-throughput screening, and the simulation of real-time dynamics. It is our hope that this text serves not only as a resource for mastering the current standard but also as a launchpad for contributing to the exciting, ongoing development of this indispensable field. We extend our sincere gratitude to TechScholastic Press, Bengaluru, for their unwavering support and instrumental facilitation, which were crucial in bringing this work to publication.
