Concepts and Classifications of Natural Hazards and Disasters

Natural hazards and disasters comprise powerful forces that befall the intricacies of society, economy, and ecology. These phenomenon are further sub-categorized due to their occurrence such as geophysical, hydrological, meteorological, biogeography and anthropogenic hazards. Derived from this definition, hazards can be classified and comprehended thereby helping in risk management, disaster management and mitigation strategies. This paper helps in filling forward the gaps present in literature to a great extent by offering an overview of the types of hazards and disasters and their major principles. It analyzes how these occurrences are related to other modern global issues, like climate change, and the changes in technology. Further the study also assesses the scope of natural hazards on critical infrastructure system and the subsequent consequences on its cyber security. Today protection of critical infrastructure is essential as so many natural hazards are in focus of these integrated systems. In this paper, recent studies and data from the years 2021-2023, current patterns, methods and tendencies in the field of disaster management are reviewed. This study indicates the need to combine information security with the elements of disaster response strategies in order to provide security and manage potential risks that may arise in the current city infrastructure. The findings underline the necessity of using several disciplines in an effort to reduce the chain reactions following the disaster. On the basis of the analysis presented in the paper, the authors embrace a comprehensive approach regarding the causes and consequences of natural hazards and disasters, while recognizing the importance of preparedness and resilience in reducing the effects of these phenomena. Their work is intended to assist decision-makers, academics, and practitioners in developing stronger structural frameworks for dealing with nature’s and technology’s threats.
