Āsāḷha Pūjā Day: The Inception of the Triple Gem and the Founding of Buddhism
This article examines the significance of Āsāḷha Pūjā Day as a pivotal Buddhist holy day marking the inception of the Buddha’s teaching. It commemorates the first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, delivered by the Buddha at the Deer Park in Isipatana, Varanasi, to the Five Ascetics. This discourse introduced the Middle Way and the Noble Eightfold Path, leading to the spiritual awakening of Koṇḍañña, who became the first monk ordained directly by the Buddha. The day thus marks the complete establishment of the Triple Gem, the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Saṅgha signifying the full foundation of Buddhism. The article also highlights recommended practices for lay Buddhists, including candlelight processions, listening to sermons, meditation and abstaining from vices, as ways to embody the Dhamma in daily life. Furthermore, Āsāḷha Pūjā Day is closely linked to the following Buddhist Lent Entry Day (Khao Phansa), which emphasizes spiritual cultivation and monastic discipline over the three-month rainy retreat. The study concludes that Āsāḷha Pūjā Day represents both a profound religious milestone and a cultural heritage that continues to inspire Buddhist faith and ethical living worldwide.
