Effect of Community-Based Development Projects on Poverty Reduction in Rural Nigeria
This study investigated the effect of community-based development projects on poverty reduction in rural Nigeria by surveying 345 community members. Results showed that over 60% of respondents experienced improvements in income levels following project implementation, although some reported no change or income decline. Community involvement in project planning and sustainability varied significantly, with only about a quarter actively participating, while many reported limited or no engagement. Major challenges hindering project success included inadequate funding (31.9%), poor community participation (23.2%), and inefficient management (20.3%). Correspondingly, 67% of respondents indicated these challenges significantly impeded poverty reduction efforts. The findings highlight the need for increased inclusive participation, enhanced funding, and improved management to boost the effectiveness of community-based initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty in rural Nigerian communities.
