Antimicrobial Activity and Phytochemical Profiling of Cinnamomum Zeylanicum and Elettaria Cardamomum against Selected Bacterial Strains
The study was planned to evaluate the phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activity of cinnamon bark powder (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) and cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) seed ethanolic extract. Phytochemical profiles of cinnamon bark exhibited the presence of phenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and steroids. In contrast, the cardamom seed extract contained phenols, flavonoids, tannins, and steroids, with alkaloids notably absent. These findings contribute to the phytochemical standardization of these commonly used spices and underscore their potential as sources of bioactive compounds for further pharmacological investigation. Screening of selected spices extracts for antimicrobial sensitivity against Escherichia coli, Coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS), Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella species, Proteus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was carried out. Antimicrobial activity of spices extract were examined by well diffusion technique. Ethanoilc extract of cinnamon powder and cardamom seed showed no antimicrobial activities against all tested microorganisms.
