Barriers to Female Labor Force Participation in Bihar: A Socio-Economic Analysis

Women’s participation in the labour force is a key factor in achieving inclusive growth and social development. In Bihar, however, the female labour force participation rate (FLFPR) remains one of the lowest in India despite significant economic and social changes. This study explores the barriers that restrict women from entering and sustaining themselves in the workforce. The research highlights how socio-economic factors such as poverty, low education levels, cultural norms, early marriages, lack of skill training, inadequate childcare facilities, and safety concerns limit women’s opportunities. The analysis also considers structural issues like gender wage gaps, informal work dependency, and limited access to government schemes. Secondary data suggests that women are largely concentrated in agriculture and informal sectors, often without fair wages or job security. The paper presents a tabular dataset on female workforce distribution across rural and urban Bihar, supported by government reports and statistical sources. The findings reveal that while policy interventions such as self-help groups, skill development programs, and employment guarantee schemes have shown some impact, deep-rooted social barriers continue to obstruct women’s economic empowerment. The study concludes that addressing gender inequality requires not just economic reforms but also changes in education, awareness, and social attitudes. Overall, the paper emphasizes the need for inclusive labour policies that create safe, skill-based, and dignified work opportunities for women in Bihar.
