The Effectiveness of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) Model in Enhancing Students' Mathematical Ability: A Review of Recent Studies
Mathematics is often considered abstract and challenging, leading to decreased student motivation and achievement. To overcome these barriers, the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) model emphasizes contextual problem-solving and active student involvement. This literature review synthesizes Dewi Herawaty’s (2018) study with more recent research conducted from 2022 onwards. The findings consistently demonstrate that RME improves students’ mathematical communication, reasoning, problem-solving skills, conceptual understanding, and overall motivation. The model encourages collaboration and makes mathematics more meaningful by connecting concepts to real-life contexts. However, challenges remain regarding teacher readiness, the need for contextual adaptation of learning materials, and the use of appropriate media. The review concludes that RME is a promising pedagogical approach, yet its effectiveness relies on systematic teacher preparation and integration into broader educational practices.
