WOOD-BASED SUGAR- DERIVED ADHESIVES
Sugar-based chemicals are considered as building blocks for a wide range of products, from additives to plastics to cosmetics, and are generally recognised as safe (GRAS) materials. Deriving sugars from biomass, specifically from side- and waste-streams of the biomass industry, allows to expand the utilisation level of related materials and decrease the carbon footprint of the industry, while also giving a push to a new technologies and applications. Sugar-based glues have been reported previously as a suitable binders for plywood, with good durability and water-resistance. [1] In this work we produce a number of wood- derived sugar-based crosslinkable adhesive formulations and test them in application to different materials on a lab-scale. The goal is to produce adhesives, that would be safe for use as food grade materials.
