Beyond performance: A narrative review of prioritizing recovery and mental conditioning of athletes in times of crisis
In the context of athletic performance, one aspect that is sometimes overlooked is recovery. However, recovery is not always employed immediately after a training session or during the competitive season. During periods of crisis, psychological demands increase significantly due to uncertainty, which can affect the entire periodization cycle, whether in team sports or individual events. Crises may range from war conflicts and quarantine lockdowns to injuries. This narrative review aims to emphasize and synthesize knowledge regarding the enhancement of rehabilitation and recovery during times of crisis. Nutritional strategies, including macronutrient timing, vitamin supplementation, and essential nutrients, as well as sleep optimization and other recovery methods such as cryotherapy and hydration, are examined alongside considerations of sleep quality and psychological demands. The importance of emotional regulation and gaining insight during such times is substantial and warrants attention. In conclusion, it is noteworthy that dedicating efforts and guiding athletes to focus on their recovery priorities can improve future performance and reinforce their self-reliance and emotional stability. This can be achieved through a specific paradigm that considers both physiological and psychological demands until the situational atmosphere normalizes.
